Being invisible online

Let’s look at something a lot of people don’t know: using a VPN doesn’t make you completely anonymous online.

A recent article explained that websites can still recognize your computer using a method called browser fingerprinting. It sounds complicated, but the idea is simple:

Your browser gives off tiny bits of information, like your screen size, system settings, fonts, and more. When you put all those pieces together, it often forms a unique pattern. Kind of like a digital fingerprint.

The surprising part? Even when people tested this using the same type of laptops, in the same room, all on VPNs… every computer still had its own unique fingerprint. Check out your fingerprint at this link.

What it means for the average person

  • A VPN hides your location, but not your device’s identity

  • Incognito mode doesn’t prevent this either

  • Websites can still tell it’s “you,” even without cookies

It doesn’t mean you should stop using a VPN; it’s still useful for privacy and security. It just means it’s not a magic invisibility cloak. Online tracking has gotten more advanced, and browser fingerprinting is one of those behind-the-scenes methods most people never hear about.
